You heard of content marketing and you know it is important,

but do you hear yourself ask: “Where do I start?”

Content marketing wiki definition is:

is a form of marketing focused on creating, publishing and distributing content for a targeted audience online.  It is often used by businesses in order to:

  • Attract attention and generate leads
  • Expand their customer base
  • Generate or Increase online sales
  • Increase brand awareness or credibility

In layman’s terms: You are telling a story, giving useful information in order to sell your product or an idea of your product (or services).  When writing content marketing, you want to sound like a real person (not a machine). You want to engage your audience.

Also, a good goal is to post new content weekly. Sounds like a lot of work, doesn’t it? So, instead of explaining how to do content marketing in detail, I want to give you a content marketing checklist and tips.

Get a content marketing plan.

Take out your calendar and plan a content marketing schedule.  Once a week is good for content marketing.  Here is a content marketing strategy:

Week 1: New content

Week 2: customer review /testimony

Week 3: Reuse an article you previously written. Content marketers do this all the time. Update or revise a new article. Switch some things up, add new pics…and Wa-la! You have a “new article ” in no time 🙂

Week 4:  Q&A post

Notice you only new to write 12 new “articles” a year for this plan. Think about the holidays, etc.  Can you use them for your benefit?

Pay attention to key words.

What and who are you trying to target? Let’s say you want to write a blog post for the keywords: “How to clean bathrooms organically”. A simple way to find some other words associated with your keywords, type your keywords into Google. Scroll to the bottom of the page and you will find suggested searches.  

Use those keywords in your post as well! Of course you can invest in a program which shows more detailed keywords but this is a free and fast way to get started.


Use your social media.

Now the you have your content, post it on your social media! Facebook, Linkedin, Pinterest, Twitter, and so on. You may have a social media schedule. Incorporate your content marketing into that schedule. Use a few catchy sentences to pipe interest to your viewers so they will click on your content. Just be honest: do not create “click bait”


I am not going to get into detail, because there are so many ways to promote. Pick a method and promote your content. Start small. You do not want to spend a lot of money when your ad or content has not been tested.

Check your performance.

How did your promotion perform? How many leads did you get per dollar? What worked and what failed? You may have to run a few small ads and mess around to find your results.

Tweak and repeat.

Once you figured out what is working and what is not generating leads, go back and tweak your content. Try again. You will eventually  find your niche.

Extra tip: You can put your business and key words on GOOGLE Alerts. Every time someone mentions you or your content, Google will notify you. You then can content that person and ask them if they will feature you on their page or whatever. More exposure and quality back links!!!
